Chapter 2: Introduction to Teaching Numbers in High School

The learning numbers is if we understanding of number, their system, properties and their application. Learning what numbers mean, how tthey may be represented, relationsips, among themand computetions with them are central to develoving number sense.
Some problem and difficulties happen in students learning numbers, in general, primary to high schoool level can be show as follows:
·         Many students of primary and junior high school in complete in mastery of numbers fact. The efficienctly critical of students to approach more advance mathematics thinking without being bogged down by simple calculations.
·         Students often make errors with signs like <, >,  because they misread and misunderstand of signs.
·         Students can not reaily comprehend the relation between numbers and quantities they represent.
·         Solving problems dealingwith real life involving numbers.
·         Students do not develop deep conceptual understanding of decimals and some common misconceptions surfaced.
·         Understanding division with fractions.
Some problem and difficulties ot teachers in teaching numbers:
·         Teachers difficulties for the introduction of new concepts and conneting it to other proviously studied mathematics concepts.
·         Teachers difficulties in explaining mathematics ideas and engaging the students in the process oof exploring them.
Teachers’ pedagogical content of teaching numbers should focus on teachers’ ability to making connection the mathematical ideas and particularly, the instruction and opportunities for exploration on how to use effectively hands on and technology in the classroom in teaching numbers, and making the transition using tools to make students understand deep about the concept.
As a teacher, if we want our students understand about the numbers when we teach them, we must knowladge and understanding on the properties of numbers system including complex numbers. In teaching and learning numbers system the teacher and students should explicitly discuss the associative, commutative, and distributive, and then students can use algebraic arguments in many areas, students know understanding the characteristic of numbers divisible by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.
The students of high school should whe learning about number system they must develop an understanding of the system of real numbers, differences between rational and irrational numbers, numbers to explore new system, and using matrices.
As high school students understanding of numbers grows, they should learn to considers operations in general ways, rather than only in particular computations. As a teacher, they should encourage students to arrive at and their conclusions by thinking about properties of numbers.
